[SOLVED] Is the 3070 enough for 2K gaming ?

Hi Everyone,

I'm thinking of doing some upgrades on my gaming computer. To start with I plan to get a 2K monitor in either 27 or 32 inches. That said if I go to 2K and want to play my games at max settings and play smoothly I'm going to need to get a new video card. I'm deciding between a RTX 3070 and a 3070 TI. Right now I'm not seeing much a difference in price the 3070 is going for a little of 1k and the 3070 TI is going for 1.3K on the low end. Would the 3070 be able to handle 2k gaming? Would I be able to get smooth, consistent frame rates or would I have to go up to the 3070 Ti. Even if the 3070 is enough I'm almost tempted to spend the extra money and go with the Ti to give myself some extra headroom for future games.

It all depends on the kind of games you would like to play and how future proof you want it to be. If you are planning on nice AAA games like MS Flight Sim, RDR2, CP2077 etc and want to skip the next gen cards, then a 3080 would be an ideal choice for decent high FPS(100+) 2k gaming. For everything else a 3070 is plenty enough. I am currently on a 2k 165Hz Dell monitor and GTX 1080. Poor thing really struggles and I plan to skip the current gen cards. Because I want atleast 3080 performance and next gen midrage cards will be there at the same price as 3070 hopefully.

On a side note, 2K ultrawides are also a good choice. And then you dont want an 8GB card to be future proof.
What exactly do you mean by 2K? 1080p falls within this category, in which case the 3070 is more than enough to handle it. If you're talking more like 1440p, then the 3070 is more or less designed to easily handle modern games at that resolution and maximum details.

The TI versions are not worth it due to their price difference with the non-TI versions, not reflecting equivalent performance. Of course 3070 can push games at QHD (misnamed 2K) above 60 fps in most games on high settings, but the gaming experience is highly dependent on the specific game, how the graphics engine manages resources and its level of optimization. Below you have some videos about 3070 performance and a comparison against 3070TI.

Here is a demonstration of 3070 performance at 1440p in some popular games.

Comparison of 3070 vs 3070TI at 1080p, 1440p, 2160p

The TI versions are not worth an extra $300, but furthermore, those prices are crazy. I would wait until prices dial down. Check a local hardware store, if possible, a Micro Center (I myself got a 3080 TI for $1.4K there.) The 3070 is perfect for high frame rate 1080p or about average frame rate (100-170 depending on games) 1440p gaming. What areas is your current computer failing to meet your new gaming requirements? Try to build off of that. If you have a system that does the job well, there’s really no reason to upgrade.

Short answer: Yes, easily.

Long Answer: I have a 3060Ti(8gb) and can run pretty much every game at 4k near ultra settings at 60fps. The 3060Ti and 3070 are almost exactly the same, with the 3070 coming slightly ahead, but not by much. At 1440p it can easily push 100+ fps at ultra settings. I assure you a 3070 is more than enough to do 1440p gaming.
