I recently ordered a laptop (Alienware M17x R4) on a sale.
I was deciding between the 7970m and the 680m, and I decided to go with the 7970m as I didn't believe the 680m's 10-20% performance gain was worth the was worth the extra $400.
I don't care about battery life, as I'm going to have it plugged in most of the time.
I also read that the 7970m's drivers were getting better.
But waiting in anticipation for the laptop to arrive, I've done some more reading, and it appears there are still some serious driver issues, and glitches in some games.
There appears to be a very mixed opinion about the 7970m.
I was just wondering if the 7970m is a good card, and if further driver updates would make it better.
(Also if I should've gone for the 680m.)
(I'm a noob here, please excuse any mistakes, thanks.) :)

The hd7970M is a nice card, the gtx680M is a bit better (not by much), they are both close performance wise. In some games the gtx680m is better and in some the hd7970m wins. The slight performance advantage of the gtx 680 it is not worth the additional $400. I think you made the right choice. As far as mobile graphics go you got a very good card, its one of the best out there right now. Over time the drivers should improve.
If you want to take a closer look at the differences here are some benchmarks:

Don't worry, be happy! :D
