I found a deal on Newegg that lets me buy a XFX 290x 8GB for $380. Good enough for me. But I have so many questions and there aren't many reviews about this card out there that answer them.

  • Do I really need 8GB for an eyefinity setup?
    Does it beat the 970?
    Does it beat 2 960s?
    Is it a reliable card?
    How does it overclock?
Any other problems I don't know about?

Thanks I'm really stressed about this purchase because its my first nice gpu I'm buying.

I would only recommend 290x 8 gb of your are going to crossfire. The bigger vram would only help if the card can produce playable frames rates using more than 4 gb. In general, it would perform very similarly to a gtx 970 or r9 290x 4 gb. Since it is $380, I would get it as there won't be a better card at that price point anyways.

Can I Crossfire it with a 4 gb model later?

Yes, As long as the Architecture are the same, amd will let you crossfire it. The problem is that both card will need to have the same textures meaning the 4 gb card will not let the 8 gb use more than 4 gb. So, I don't recommend it as it kind of defeats the purpose of getting 8 gb 290x. Also, not that no amd card supports hdmi 2.0, so playing on 4k TV is out of the question until next generation for amd users 🙁.

Thanks, I thought it might do that. I think I'm ordering it tomorrow. Goodbye NVS 290!
