Solution
Not out of the box. The bios would need to have been updated with an older 8th gen cpu to do so.
Chipsets B365 and Z390 are compatible with 9th gen out of the box.

how do you update the BIOS
2 ways:
-using an 8th gen cpu, within bios, the update can be downloaded and installed over the net - the PC will be restarted first, in order to enable networking, as that function is off by default.
-using an 8th gen cpu, download the bios file from the manufacturer's website, restart the PC and go into bios. Find the new file with the update from there, and install it.
