Is the BFG EX-1000w PSU worth it?

$109 at best buy and tiger direct, is it a good PSU or is the fact that its dirt cheap compared to other 1000w PSUs a reason to doubt its performance and value?

i mean compared to other 1000w or even 750w PSUs this is really cheap at $109

5770 CF = 500-550w
5850 CF = 600-650w

1000w is way overkill for either.

I would get a Seasonic 750w,Corsair 750 TX or Antec TP 750 for 2 x 5850s.

im actually using a Raidmax Volcano 630w PSU, would that be enough? its not 80+ though
i was just considering the BFG 1000w for its price

That Raidmax would probably explode if you tried to get more than 400w out of it. So, no, that's not enough.

Raidmax is a "budget brand". No way I would trust it. Do not get excited by the whole 1000w thing. You do not need it and to be honest 750 watts is giving you plenty of headroom, 650w would be fine with a quality unit. The 3 brands I mentioned are very high quality / highly rated and about the same price or even a few dollars less.

Stay with tier 1 ( expensive...more for servers on 24/7 ) or tier 2 and you will be fine. Corsair, Seasonic and the new Antec TruePower series are my recommendations.

i kinda leave my PC ON even 16-24hrs so it would benefit me to get a Tier 1 right? sometimes the only time my PC is off is when there is a black out or when im asleep sometimes i turn it off

No no what I was talking about was servers that if they go down they take down a company with them. For home use tier 2 is FINE. Servers are pretty specialized form the CPUs to the RAM to the hard drives to the power supplies.
No reason NOT to buy tier 1 but for the most part they cost WAY more and are more than you need.

For its price it is a bargain...

One thing you can check is the efficiency of that PSU at your load condition. PSU are normally tested from 20% to 100%. Some high capacity PSU i.e. 850W/1000W have issues at 20% to 50% range. The efficiency goes down significantly. The good known brands such as (corsair) have excellent efficiency even at 20% load so it does not waste too much energy when not loaded.


Read the reviews.

Its cheap for that capacity. BFG is new to PSU business so its trying to capture market share and attention.

I would only use a list like that to get some general ideas. There's just to much bias, vagueness and inaccuracy in there to make specific purchasing decisions.

If your running 24/7 you should get a quality PSU that's 80+ bronze certified or better (unless you still live with you parents and don't mind sticking them with the electric bill).

Granted, a few of those are actually more expensive than the BFG which was designed to be fairly efficient
at low loads according to the review at HardOCP, so it might still be an option.

wow i actually was at a Frys today (50miles away from my house while visiting family friends) i returned the $54 2gb(2x1gb) ddr3 1333mhz in exchange for a pair of Corsair 4gb(2x2gb) ddr3 1333mhz for $79 ($119 before rebate of $40)

i walked on the PSU area and found the Antec TruePower 750w (advertised $149 after $20 rebate at Frys.com) at an instore only price of $99 and a $20 MIR driving it to $79, i hope this will be enough for what i need

i know and it even has a $20 MIR, im so glad i did not impulse buy on that BFG PSU, what was strange to me was that the Antec TP 650 was at $119 with no discount or MIR, i was gona grab that because it was in the isle but wen around and found the PSU wall, asked the rep the cheapest PSU they had and he checked and pointed me towards the Antec TP 750w

The Antec Truepower New is a very good power supply. You should not have any problems with it.

There are two Fry's Electronics stores in the Phoenix, Arizona area. I visit them on a regular basis. I always look for unannounced "manager's specials".

It also pays to do some research, be patient, and shop carefully.

wow this is a really big change for me, my room doesnt feel like an oven like with my last Raidmax Volcano(pun intended) PSU that just spews out massive amounts of hot air. its really quite and its really cool, now i realize the benefit of a good 80+ certified PSU although the hybrid modular cables were a bit of a bust since i still had cables i didnt need but i found a way to tuck them away ontop of the drivecage

Yeah, the cables were Oklahoma Wolf's main complaint in that jonnyguru review but since it's priced more like a non-modular(even at the higher non-sale price) I'd let it slide. It should serve you well for many years.
