Is the CPU fan supposed to come on when testing?

I'm building my first PC and I built it outside of the case and when I went to test it before putting it in the case, the cpu fan didn't come but the light on the mobo did and the test speaker did beep once. So is my cpu fan DOA?

Yes, or it wasn't connected correct.

By the time you get the beep it has tested the memory, and well into it's running state.

I have it connected correctly. I'm just wondering if maybe I didn't short the power on the mobo correctly.

If you mean ground, there are plenty of ground wired going from the power supply to the motherboard.

It's the Deep Cool Gammaxx 400. It has 4 wires coming off the fan.

Power supply is the Seasonic ss-750KM X-series Motherboard is the asus Vanguard B85

Try replugging it, in case it's a bad connecting.
Resetting the CMOS/BIOS can't hurt, and might help.
I'd test the plug with a multimeter, and the fan with a old power supply.

Awesome, thanks for the help! I must have just gotten ahead of myself. I WAS a bad connection.

Good, I checked the reviews, and it looks like a pretty good cooler. No fan failures either😉
