[SOLVED] is the CPU or MB cooked?

i have a client who dropped off a generic gamer desktop with a i7 8700k intel 1151, as it was overheating. i replaced the heatsink with a hyper 212, but still the same thing: random shutdowns, BSOD, etc. i ran speedfan and got these readings just before using the software heavyload, which always crashes the unit. not being an electrician, i'm hoping someone with much more knowledge in this area can tell me if the screenprint will confirm if the CPU is the issue or if the MB was also damaged.

THANKS!!!

Solution
The system is being overclocked to 5Ghz with Hyper 212. What did you expect?
Hyper 212 cooler can barely handle this cpu on stock settings. For overclocking it is way too weak.

Remove all overclocks.
Erase the uselessly detailed post.
It will stop responders from reading more.

Yes,a a i7-8700k is a powerful processor that can get hot when fully loaded.
Has it been overclocked?
If so, back off the OC.
You may find that a hyper 212 is not up to the job.
What is the make/model of the case?
Does it have sufficient front intake capability to feed a good cooler?
Run HWmonitor.
It will give you the current, minimum and maximum cpu temperatures.
Is the minimum in the 10-15c. over ambient?
If not, the cooler may not have been mounted well.
The 212 can be tricky to install and get square on the cpu.

If you see a max of 100c. it indicates heat throttling or shutdown.

It is unlikely that the 8700K is damaged. It will monitor temperature and will shut down to protect itself if it senses a dangerous temperature. That is around 100c.
It is unlikely that the motherboard suffered any damage either.

also, i can leave the unit runnign with no stress for hours, the minute i turn on heavyload, the temps jump from 40c to 85c and then, i get the BSOD, all within a few seconds.

thank you for the ideas and advise. it is much appreciated, TT. i will reinstall the cooler tonight. even if the 212 isn't strong enough of a cooler, there should at least be some relief noted before a BSOD, right?

one last q, pls. if the cooler isn't the problem, what would be the next thing to look at for a possible reason behind this?

i really appreciate the help, folks. this is one of those clients where time is soooooooooooooo important that they must have this fixed by yesterday, but, thank you for all the help!! i did re-install the cooler, but same results; the unit would run all day at right around 38c, but the minute i stress the CPU, the temps jump to 85c, then, BSOD...even faster when i stress the GPU. i also tried removing RAM, but no help. BIOS was also in order.

i will use all these great suggestions in the future to help you folks help me, and will post the screenshots instead of the files.

STAY SAFE!!!
