is the extra 4gb vram worth the extra 40 bucks?

But at the price point I've seen for the 8GB unit its starts to be a better idea to get a 1060 instead.

I'd say it'd be worth it for future proofing as more titles become VRAM hungry. The biggest thing is how long do you plan on keeping the video card for before upgrading it next.
