Do I really need to spend $200+ to get a GTX 1080 over a 1070 for 1440p gaming? I will be getting an Acer XB271HU monitor if that makes a difference. Also, I would like my PC to last for at least 2 years without needing to upgrade. Preferably 5. But I DO NOT want to spend $650 or more for a GPU that will only do well at 1440p for a year. Please help!

Solution
I'll simplify:
1070 will do good on 1440p@144Hz
1080 will do great on 1440p@1444Hz.
I'd buy now the GTX 1070 (well, i did), and upgrade in a year or two to 1170 or 1270 or whatever they call it - that card would be excellent/perfect for 1440p@144Hz.
P.S.
BTW, i hope you know that some games are CPU intensive and getting above 100-120FPS would require an i7 over 4GHz.

I will be buying a 1440p/144hz monitor.

I won't be playing at maxed out settings unless its a really easy-to-run game. I'll most likely be playing at ULTRA or HIGH settings. Also, would a 1070 be completely unsuitable for 1440p/144hz gaming? I know that it won't reach 144fps... but that's not my goal.

Here is a link to the monitor I'm looking to buy:

well there's not really much sense in buying a display like that if the card can barely reach 75fps
the differnce between the 1070 & the 1080 are usually 15-20 fps

founders edition benchmark comparison:

at 2560x1440 the difference is bigger as at 3440x1440(WQHD) both cards struggle to a degree

but the 1080 is by far the better card for that resolution if you want to 'future proof'7

Haha ok thanks fellow wolf! But the problem is I don't want to get an $800 monitor and then buy a GPU that's not adequate enough for it.

you most likely won't be able to really use the display to it's full potential on ultra settings with either card
it could be wiser to go for a 1070 now and upgrade to a card that can in 2-3 years (for a cheaper price)

it really comes down to how much you feel comfortable with spending

Hmm... but I thought the 1080 would do well in 1440p.

EDIT:

According to this benchmark, the GTX 1080 would be perfect for a 1440p/144hz/gsync monitor.

Yup. Waiting for Kaby Lake. I'm going for a core i7-7700k.

I don't want to wait for Zen... it's far away and that way I'd be waiting forever to get PC parts.

Btw I just checked a 1440p benchmark on gta 5... the 1080 barely gets 60fps :/

if you look at the benchmark I posted above the 1080 reaches 80fps on average on 3440x1440p, as your screen is smaller it would be more

But then why was this guy getting these results?

It is in a grassy area, and he did not run the benchmark, he only did some gameplay. In-game, I guess you won't be in a grassy area 24/7, am I right? So, the GTX 1080 has a good performance.
~Sorry for bad english!~
