I am looking to build a new pc and I can buy a used gtx 780 Lightning for 300. It is legit however I am worried about the card being outdated. I either buy this or a gtx 960. Remember this is CAD so it is 250 usd for the lightning,

Solution

780 is far from outdated, and a third party 780 will be fairly close to a stock 970 in terms of performance.
780 will outperform the 960, but think about this, the 780 is no longer being built.....
so is it outdated? If you can afford a 970, then that's a different argument.
All this being said, I have dual 780tis, I'm not going to upgrade for at least another generation, maybe 2.

What makes anythinf different about it not being built anymore?

No, the 780 is definitely not outdated. It is a better card compared to the 960, but if I were you, pay a few extra bucks for a Ti version. The 960 is newer, but doesn't offer as much performance. The 780 is about on par with the 970.

I would expect with the Lightning model you'd be up around GTX 970 levels. So definitely not outdated.

I agree about the 970 part, but I think that link is for reference cards and the Lightning is much faster than reference.

It's still a 780. And the stock is still 10%+ slower. Even if it's OC'd enough to catch it, you can OC the 970 if you want and leave it far behind again. $30 difference between used and new, with the 970 running with much better power efficiency, I just don't see the 780 as a good buy.If it was a 780TI and only case $225 then that's different. but a used 780 vs a new 970 and you only save $30? Nope, not a good enough deal for me.

I can't fault any of this. The power usuage difference would probably pay off the price difference in the life of the card, especially if he's using it for work purposes.

We're all in agreement! Stuff the 780, buy a nice 970 and let the advantages pay for the price difference😛

If you read what I said I wrote that I am Canadian. So it would be over 100 dollars more for a 970.... PLease read before accusing me of being cheap buddy...

I had the MSI Twin Frozr GTX 780 and it was a great card for 1440p on down, it will have a .5GB VRAM disadvantage compared to the 970. Another option you might want to look at is the R9 290 and R9 290X, not sure if those are cheaper in Canada though.

The gtx 970 and amd r9 290s are all over 120 to buy new. I am also only gaming at 1080p.

I went down to Boston with my school and got asked if we had google. Are we really that forgien to Americans?

That's funny. You've heard about the ugly American tourist right? It may not be just a tourist thing....
My hometown is about 100 miles from the border. On our cable station we had CBC, so I grew up with Hockey Night In Canada, and boy do I miss it....ugly suits and all.
