Hello! Soon, it will be 2017, and the 970 was released in 2014, a while ago. Is it too old now, for gaming, should i choose the 1060? In hungary the 1060 is more expensive than the 970 nearly about 100 dollars, i dont think it is a nice deal... I would use the card for 3-4 years from now. It goes next to a 4460. Thank you, have a nice day!

1) Your frame rate, on average, will not be as high if you have a noticeably weaker CPU (start introducing CPU bottlenecks at times) though it will vary a lot by the game.

2) Having said that, if you run out of VRAM on the GTX970 your performance will plummet.

3) So again, VRAM is going to be an issue going forward though (6GB vs "3.5GB") but if you tweak your game settings properly you can avoid most of the issues.

4) GTX1060 6GB will be far better for VR if that's something you'll consider

5) GTX1060 has a feature that can help prevent STUTTERING. It's called Dynamic Load Balancing. I don't think any DX12 or Vulkan games have utilized it yet but they will in the...
I recently upgraded from GTX 780 (non-TI version) to GTX 1060.

I ran benchmarks in Shadow of Mordor, Company of Heroes 2, Tomb Raider (2013), Dirt 3 and Hitman Absolution. On average I saw a 17% improvement in fps at 1080p max settings. I am running an i7 from 2013 and 32Gb of ram.

So you probably won't see a huge jump in fps and given the price, it's probably better to hold on to the 970 for now.

So the question is buy a GTX 970 or GTX 1060? Which version of the GTX 1060 are we talking about the 3GB or 6GB? The GTX 1060 is the replacement for the GTX 980. I use a GTX 970 and I haven't run into anything I can't play at very high settings. But who knows what games will be out in several years or their requirements.

If you can afford the newest GPU I would get that. Of course for $100 more than the GTX 970 I'd expect the 6GB version of the GTX 1060.

The GTX970 is still a perfectly good card. It's hard to assign a value to it.

The RX-480 8GB (8GB not 4GB) is the card I recommend for long-term usability. Perhaps it's too expensive where you are (I don't know), but it's basically the same architecture as what the game consoles use and it's ASync Compute hardware and other things AMD is doing are going to make that an excellent card in the longer term.

For NEWER GAMES (DX12 and Vulkan) the RX-480 is pulling ahead of the GTX1060. I expect to see it as much as 50% faster than the GTX970 in the near future.

(current/older games don't tend to change much)

Solution
Well, i think i would not buy the gtx 1060 yet. $100 is a lot of money for me, and as i saw in bechmarks, there are no big fps differrnces too. I think i will be fine, or i could wait a bit, and buy the 1060 a few months later, i'll have more money then.
Should i wait, or now buy the 970?
Buying an RX 480 could be an opinion, but i'd rather buy an fx-8350 or ryzen cpu next to it.
Thanks, have a good day!

Hey, just want to make sure you know that there's no compatibility difference between having an amd or intel cpu paired with an amd gpu. Of the options discussed here so far, I'd go with the RX-480 if that's within your budget as its the best long-term option.

Thank you for these infos!
If i would buy a 480, i'd rather buy an amd cpu it to make it full amd, and put red fans into my case.

In Hungary the 480 is mutch more expensive, than the 970.

Prices:

1060 6gb:
$300 to $350

RX 480:
$250 to $300

GTX 970:
$200 to $250

So, which would really worth it?
Thanks, have a wonderful day!
