Is the GTX 980 really any better than the 780 Ti?

I just don't get the big deal about the GTX 980 and 970 release. They basically just renamed the 780 Ti the 980 and the GTX 780 the 970 and made them just a little more power efficient and brought down the price by about $100. The benchmarks between the 780 ti and 980 are neck-and-neck and same with the 780 to 970. This wasn't the step forward I was looking forward to. The 500 series to 600 series had a much greater leap, and then the 600 series to 700 series had a smaller leap. The 700 series to the 900 series has no leap at all. It's becoming a complete gimmick.

In terms of performance, you have a point for having a neck to neck but, the big BUTT is as you have mentioned POWER CONSUMPTION. As we "engineers" are focused on reducing the consumption cost while giving a great performance and that technology is very hard to attain. (If you know what I`m saying).

Performance wise, 780 and 780ti will/can compete head to head. :)

Honestly though FPS to me is all that matters. Unless the GPU is like insanely loud... of course I don't want that. My point is that there were people hyping up this release like it was going to be some sort of breakthrough when it is basically just a re-release and money grab.

I'm not saying that no one should buy it, it might be worth it for the price drop alone compared to the 700 series. But I'm disappointed in the performance. Early this year lots of people on all sorts of forums were saying to not buy the 780 Ti because the next series was going to be so much better, so much for that.
