On my new gaming laptop my hard drive usage fluctuates on idle with around 5-6% then gradually rises to 100% then gradually lowers back to 20% with a delay then back to 5-10%. Thats kind of the rhythm. I went to compare it to a very old mainstream computer (2012) and the hdd is at 0% at all times on idle unless I do something like a virus scan.

How can I diagnose if something is wrong?

whats rest of PC doing? expect something has to be using some CPU for the HDD to get used?

Windows 10 uses idle to run defrag in the idle times, it could be that.

I assume you watching Task manager, click performance tab and then choose open resource manager and then open the hdd tab and you can see whats using it there.
