How much of a performance gain in gaming would I get from upgrading from an i5 2300 to an i5 6600?

You might see a small benefit in gaming. Whether that is enough to justify how much it would cost to upgrade is really up to you.

The best processor for the socket 1155 is a i7-3770K or a xeon E3-1290v2. Not sure if that helps you any thou ;-)
