Is the I5 6600k good for a gtx 970 or a r9 390

The I5 is the sweet spot for gaming. If you aren't going to overclock the cpu then simply go for an non-k version like 6500. Definetely not an overkill for those cards.

It's a very good fit, and it provides a lot of processing power and won't bottleneck either cards.
