is the i7-3770 outdated ?

Not yet. You still have a year or two there. You are only about 15% or so less efficient at the same core speed than Skylake. That's not enough for an update to be necessary for gaming yet.

thanks so this cpu and a gtx 970 should run brand new games at least at medium settings ?

Yes, likely better than Medium 60Hz, 1080p in many cases. That information that SR-71 posted is very useful. Of course, they are using a Titan X to put as much of the limit as possible on the CPU.

I'd say you're good for a few more years actually. I'd say it'll start bottlenecking midrange graphics cards around the year 2018 and be completely needing an upgrade by 2020. With a GTX 970 you can run current games at high or ultra settings at 1080p.

Price has A LOT to do with it. When those systems get priced for the main stream (i.e. like 1080p now), that's when they will be widely adopted.

@OP: For your CPU, you are good for at least 2 to 3 years. My CPU is older than yours and I still don't feel or see a need to upgrade. My CPU doesn't hinder the performance in any noticeable way, but I might upgrade after Kaby Lake comes out. A strong GPU goes a long way in gaming.

Still running a stock 2600k; CPUs really aren't major limiting factors anymore, since most mid-tier CPUs (made by Intel at least) are fully capable of maxing out single-GPU rigs.

The i7 3770 is the most recommended CPU for games at the moments when developers release system requirements for this generation of games so I would say your perfectly fine for another 2-3 years like a person said above.

It's the beginning of 2016 now. 2020 was mentioned. If we look back to the beginning of 2011 we can see just how far things have come, and I expect the rate of graphics change to be a little higher because they have fallen so far behind CPU development in the last few years.

I'm not sure 'price' matters as much as 'lust for technology'. Most of us are prepared to sell of a minor body part for really good tech.

Your CPU is perfectly fine speed wise, just keep it at a decent temp of 30-70 and you will be fine.
