Is the i7-4770 still a good CPU for gaming at 1080p? I like to use the best graphics available in a game, so what would be the best graphics card it could handle without too much bottleneck? Thank you.

Solution
Doesn't make a hill of beans difference. At 1080p, Op more than likely has a 60Hz monitor, and the only thing that matters is the lows. As long as the lows are somewhere above 60fps, the maximum fps or even the average fps is a useless benchmark. OP gets 60.

At anything above 60fps, the 1080ti and 1660ti are exactly the same. Same details, same resolution, same ability. Everything is the same except 1 thing. The price. The 1080ti seriously isn't worth it. Not unless that monitor is 120/144Hz.

Decent rule of thumb is gpu = 2x price of cpu. Or thereabouts. With a $100 cpu, a Used 1080ti at $500 is pointless. The gpu costs more than the entire pc by a good margin.
I would say if you have a budget of 3-400, than you might as well use integrated graphics.
Because that CPU has a really good iGpu. Better than a lot of gpus.
But You can probably handle a 1070, or an rtx 2060 or 70 super.
OR
AMD Gpus,
The RX 5700XT is good. and the rx 5700.
The Vega 64 would also do the trick.

Wow. Thanx guys. I never dreamed the "old" i7-4770 was still that good. A 1080 Ti? Seriously?

Thanx, but you must have missed where I said I like to play at highest graphics settings possible.I'm not a competitive gamer. I just like to play for the story involved.

Solution
For gaming at 1080p, if you can get a good deal for a gtx 1080 ti I said go ahead with it. Eventually you will want to change your CPU for newer games.
But I believe you will be ok on any card older/newer of around that level (either be GTX/RTX or Radeon).

If you like to play story mode then yeah just crank up the settings and enjoy the ride.

NVM, I just checked the prices, and Karadjgne is right, no point of spending +500 for a used card. You can get a brand new Radeon 5700 or 5700XT / Geforece RTX 2070 or 2060 Super for lower or same price (check the review if you go the Radeon way, some of them have really horrible cooling solutions).

If you are aiming towards 1080p with everythig crancked up maybe a gtx 1660ti is not a bad idea at all (more card than you need for 1080p@60Hz). You will have enough card for a few years with it.

The 1070 ti or a gtx 1080 would do the trick. They are good for running high settings.

It’s probably still good for gaming, but If you are aiming for 60fps, then this CPU should be able to do it whether it’s 1080p or 1440p and you’d get a GPU that is doing well in those resolutions respectively.
So yeah, don’t target high refresh rate gaming with this CPU, not today, but for anything 60fps it should do well enough.

the few generations old 4c/8t CPUs (or worse yet, 4c/4t) are not, or, should not be, really any one's first choice these days,as they tend to take hits in action filled sequences in many of the newest games, often tanking minimum frame rates to the point of hitches/stutters according to many.

If you already own it, and are happy with the frame rates in the games you play at your chosen res, then enjoy it until you are not. (I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell you to not to get a good GPU for it, even though you could easily take it with you to your next build. :)

Yes, it is the preferred way, and thank you for noticing that 😊

With a new thread, there's greater likelihood of a wider scope of help, many ppl don't bother looking at already long posts as they feel there is already sufficient help, and more than a few will not bother looking at posts marked solved.

So it really is in your best interests to start new, since it is a different question, you aren't just answer shopping.

Happy hunting 👍
