Solution
thing is if you donr have at least bios 1.2 you will need to flash up to a supporting bios with a supported cpu

your old 4460 cpu also needed at least bios 1.2

Core i5 Haswell Refresh i5-4460 100 3.2 1M 6M C0 84 HD Graphics 4600 1100MHz '' 7866v12.zip ''

so if it works now the 4790k should as well out of the box [???] as is seeing you said you all ready got 1.4 on the board now ? your good to go
most all z87 [8 series ] requires a bios update to use haswell refresh all this info is showen in the cpu support list of your board

Core i7 Haswell Refresh i7-4790K 100 4.0 1M 8M C0 88 HD Graphics 4600 1250MHz 7866v12.zip

https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z87M-GAMING.html#support-cpu

I assume that 7866v12.zip means bios 1.2 ?? msi is not so clear

''Support Haswell-Refresh series Processors''

https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z87M-GAMING.html#down-bios

so with that you would need at least bios 1.2 flashed to support that 4790k cpu

Thanks for the swift response!

But I honestly have no idea how to update my bios, I've been in there but have no idea what I'm doing, I downloaded what I thought was 1.5 from the MSI website and It was a Zip file, which left me a bit baffled on what to do next haha!

if you for sure got 1.4 all ready then your good the 4790k needs 1.2 at the minimum so your good should not need to flash at all . heck my old z87 is still on its first release works great with what I got on it so no need to risk a flash .
a bios flash is only required if deemed necessary for compatibility or to correct any system stability .. if alls working good no need to risk it

anyway according to MSi on your board 1.2 gave the compatibility for the haswell refresh cpu's and you all ready got a later 1.4 running on it now should be fine

I assume a GTX 1080 will be fine out of the box too right? Thanks again for all the help mate

Basically there are 3 ways. One is by windows, a dos boot up, and the final an best is going into your bios. Unzip the file and put it on a thumb drive. Then navigate in your bios to where it lets up do the update. It will let you pick the new version. While its updating do not turn off anything. If your unsure it may be best to just leave it alone as your current version supports the CPU.

the rule is if its not broke don't fix it - no need to do any unnecessary bios flashing and MSi is not so great and there tools suck the guy should be well and good with the bios he all ready got ..

no point you suggesting he take that unnecessary risk and like I said MSi is a risk compared to other brands

then that software flashing ''crap'' is the biggest risk/joke of them all in ways to flash to start with

good luck
