I've got an i7 8700k and I was thinking about buying the i9 10900k but after watching a lot of videos and benchmarks about it I was a bit surprised that the i9 isn't really THAT much faster than my i7.
It's MUCH faster in a lot of tasks like working in photoshop and rendering photos but not so much better in gaming.
My question is, is the i9 10900k even worth it if bought solely for gaming?

Honestly at the moment it wouldn't be much of an upgrade - the 10900K is based on the same cpu core as the 8700K so per clock it isn't any faster. 6 cores / 12 threads is currently the sweet spot for gaming - that may change in the future but isn't the case now and probably won't be for a few years.

If you really wanted to upgrade I wouldn't go for a 10900K - either go with a Ryzen 5000 series chip (even the 5600X is faster than the 10900K in games thanks to higher ipc), or wait for Intels 11th gen which with finally be on a newer more powerful core (which is rumoured to leap-frog the 5000 series).

Something to also consider is price. Here the 10900k are more expensive that the 5900x.Either go 5xxx series or wait for 11th gen.Only problem i have whit the 11th gen is by the time it gets released we will be close to AMD's 6xxx models. If intel want to be sneak then they should release it Jan/Feb 2021.Waiting for any longer and they would be in serious trouble.
