is the io shield neccesary?

i'm in the middle of building my (gaming) computer right now. only problem is, i'm at the step where i put the motherboard in the case. It isn't fitting properly because the tabs on the back of the io shield are interfering.I experimented by taking the io shield off and screwing the motherboard in, where it fit perfectly. So my question is is it really necessary? because the only way i can fit it in is without a motherboard. I read online and someone said that they had the same problem and they just cut the tabs off. That is an option but i am also curious if i need it at all.

Whilst not completely necessary, it isn't wise to remove it. It prevents static discharge when plugging stuff in. Without it, you run the risk of damaging your motherboard.

And don't cut the tabs off - they're designed to touch the motherboard to keep it grounded. If you cut them off, it's no better than having no shield at all.

Just bend the tabs out of the way, install the motherboard, then bend them back into place - ensure that they're touching the ports on the motherboard.

Technically, no, the I/O shield is not required, but highly recommended. It really does help keep the dust and critters out.

Ha! Poor little fella. I ran a PC for a long time without an I/O shield and never had any issues, but dust did accumulate quicker.
