The OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W is on shell shocker right now on newegg and I was wondering if it's a good PSU. My system will probably never use past 500w, (6300 + HD 7950). Should I get this PSU or see if a better deal pops up. I'm building in december.

It's decent. Not what I would recommend first but not a bad model especially if you can get it really cheap. Don't buy parts now and build months later. What if the parts you buy now are DOA? You are just creating potential headaches for yourself if you have to return anything. Just save the money and buy all at once.

It's made by Sirtec and the same platform as the 500w and 600w units. Both of those got Hardwaresecrets Golden ( highest ) awards. It's likely HardOCP got a lemon during testing.

They also failed the ZT 650w that got a Hardwaresecrets Golden award and an 8.7/10 from jonnyguru.

Even Seasonic can have a bad day :) Overall evidence points to the OCZ being a decent unit though.

I have an OCZ now powering my system. I am an OCZ fan, but some of the things he is saying about that model worry me.

However, once we open the unit we find that OCZ 700W ModXStream Pro looks very much like a cheap group regulated unit. This is further compounded by the fact that the unit has some questionable component selections in the mystery "Rec" capacitors. Good capacitors only add slightly to the total cost of a unit so why even something along the lines of Samxon or at the very least Teapo was excluded from this build is bewildering. Further, the unit only features a 3 year warranty and with questionable capacitors this is hardly reassuring.

I think I'm going to skip getting it since the shell shocker is only for $70 dollars. I've ordered everything but power supply and MoBo so far, but a friend is letting me borrow his system to use for testing the individual parts. He's got the same CPU, GPU and MoBo (I plan on getting) as me. I'll wait for a seasonic or the XFX 550 watt I've had on my part list for awhile goes on sale (although XFX PSUs are made by seasonic?) Thanks for all the help everyone.

Yes all XFX units are made by Seasonic and they are generally quite a bit cheaper than buying a Seasonic name branded unit while retaining the same quality.
