Is the RTX 2080 already obsolete with only 8GB memory?

I'm being a bit over-dramatic. I know the RTX 2080 will still perform very well even at 1440p.

So I'm playing The Division 2 Closed Beta at 1440p Ultra preset with my GTX 1080 Ti and it's using up to 9GB vram. I'll be curious to see professional benchmarks including this game comparing the GTX 1080 Ti and RTX 2080.

Thoughts?

I think that's like saying you can't compare 16GB of DDR3 to 8GB of DDR4.

GDDR6 is faster with lower power consumption, but I'm sure it can still suffer from a lack of memory capacity can it not? It's just surprising to me that we are already seeing over 8GB video memory usage in games running in 1440p (not even 4K.) This would make the Radeon Vega VII a better contender for 1440p and 4K since it has 16GB of HBM2, offering a cheaper and potentially better solution than Nvidia at that price point.

This is just speculation since I don't own either RTX 2080 or Radeon Vega VII. I just find this very interesting to see this much vram usage. It could be that this is the Beta and they optimize it to use less in the final release.
