Question Is the RTX 3080 10GB still good versus RTX 4070 Ti 12GB ?

Hi.

Want to ask for my son since he is on the fence to buy a new gaming pc, one is having rtx 3080 10gb with i7 12700kf, 32gb ddr5 ram with a 360 aio cooling.
Just not sure how good idea it is for him to buy last gen i7 and also last gen rtx.

He cant afford a 4080, the gpu prices in europe is crazy and going from a 3080 pc to a 4080 is 1000-1100dollar in difference so its not a option.

That said it’a probably hard to answer but how long could one predict 3080 10gb last when one want 60fps with ultra or high settings both for 4K and for 1440p?

Big difference from titles and how they are optimized, but for rtx 3080 someone on YouTube get 75-78 fps in 4K and some other barley hit 60fps so it is a bit confusing to know how this card deliver.

Rtx 4070ti is another route to consider but it is almost 400 dollars more vs the 3080, just for 2 gb more vram, dont know if the 4070ti would last much longer? And should one even consider the rtx 4070?

Appreciate some help to be done with the decision

4070Ti is another step up, generally outclasses the 3090 and 3090Ti in gaming, again with the exception of 4K.

But we are talking about a couple percent here and there.

I would call these cards more future proof for 1440p. 4K right now with most every setting maxed out, you are looking above 60 FPS, but in a year or two, going to have to start dropping settings.

Personally, I would take the RTX 4070 and then upgrade in a few years. With any luck pricing for next gen cards will improve as they deal with decreased sales from these higher prices.

Yes so if i pay the extra 350-400 dollar for the 4070ti card it would still not last much long and be future proof in 1440p?

The 4070 seems similar to 3080 10gb yes, could go with a 4070 pc but then i must pay 200 dollar more, then i get 13th gen of i7 13700 but only 16gb ram and a smaller fan for the cpu vs aio and 32gb on the 3080 pc that cost 200 less.

If this is a "brand-in-a-box" Lenovo PC, I would definitely recommend that you take the RTX 3080. I say this because companies like Lenovo, HP and Dell are notorious for deliberately sabotaging any possible upgrading to the PCs that they sell.

Lenovo will only provide the the absolute minimum PSU that your PC can get away with. Since the RTX 3080 uses a good deal more power than either of the 4070 models, you're more likely to get a beefier PSU with it, one that can handle an RTX 3080 reliably and would therefore be in a much better position to upgrade to something else later.

The RTX 4070 and 4070 Ti are only 200W and 285W respectively so it's possible that Lenovo would give you a weaker PSU with those cards. This would make upgrading a lot more complicated, if not impossible.

On the other hand, the RTX 3080 is a 320W card which means that Lenovo would have to bundle a more potent PSU in a PC with an RTX 3080 than it would with the other two. This would make upgrading downright easy. To give you an example of a possible future upgrade, the RTX 4080 is also a 320W card so it's guaranteed that the PSU included with the RTX 3080 would be able to handle a card that potent without issue.

The fact that the 4070 Ti is absurdly more expensive (an extra $400 is just insane) only makes my recommendation that much easier. The Intel i7-12700KF is also a fantastic gaming CPU and will give your son many years of gaming fun so that's not something that I would worry about if I were you.

Memory is a cheap upgrade later on. And you could always deal with the CPU cooler. Whatever they bundle with it is likely to be inadequate. These are 200W+ CPUs, 120mm AIO and cheap OEM heatsinks are not up to the task. (Though for just gaming, they are likely fine)

Was surprised since it is a 360 AIO, not sure what you mean with the heatsinks? Yes would be used for gaming only.

360 AIO is just fine.

If that 13700 has a lesser heatsink and less memory, you could replace it if it is a problem and add memory.

Thanks for great information, yes the psu is a 850W and is rated as 90% effiency, nothing about brand or if it’s gold rated, but i would think they use maby their own parts?

AIO is a 360 Lenovo premium for what ever that means, havent readed about bad pumps or anything so probably a decent cooler even im still conservative to bring watercooling into a pc

Start to think it’s kinda better to maby save the 400 dollars, to not buying the 4070ti and just go for the 3080 until if ever the 4080 get a more normal price later on.

Only thing i seen on YouTube is that Lenovo have 4800mhz ddr5 but something making it only been able to use 4400mhz, but still fast enough and one wouid not notice it if one is used to have ddr4 3200mhz?

Yes i understand now my bad, you ment the 4070 pc with a small heat sink on the cpu. I think i just leave that pc since it cost me 200 dollar more for kinda same fps in games but benefit from the dlss3, it should not be easy

That is very nice, because 3080 isn't going to last very long, I'm afraid, and not because of the performance, no. The 3080 is powerful enough to play games at 1440p. It's because of the VRAM.

If you can't wait, my lowest recommendation is RX 6800. 16GB VRAM will last a long time, at least 5 years.

If you can wait, I suggest that you wait for an RX 7800 XT or RX 7700 XT. I think it's going to be released 3-6 months from now. There may even be a 16GB RTX 4060 Ti if you want to wait until early 2024.

All of them are great cards IMO.

Yes i like the idea with more vram from amd. But they are not easy to find as a pre build, he could also be just as happy with high settings. Dont know how much vram it saves though.
Would look more and see if we could find other options and see what we do, could always upgrade the card later but it should last hopfully 2-3 years before spending the money for a upgrade.
