Is the ryzen 5 1600 good for 144hz?

Title says it all, i’m planning to buy a ryzen 5 1600 and a gtx 1070. Some people told me a ryzen 5 1600 is bad for 144hz, is that true or is it fine?

High FPS in AAA games is very cpu dependent, not just gpu. This is where Intels stronger cores often show their extra performance. Now the 1600 does a very good job but a i5 8600k can drive higher FPS if not limited by the gpu.

Oh. Well then it wasn't that they were bad, just that there are faster CPUs. Faster CPUs usually cost more.

Depends on what you are trying to play and what your graphics card is. Your graphics card determines your max FPS and your CPU determines your average frame rate. A Ryzen 5 paired with a 1070 GTX will anywhere from 70 to 120 FPS depending on which AAA games you are playing. If you are playing League or CSGO, you are already going to be over 200FPS anyways. If you invested in a stronger CPU such as a 8600k (which is significantly better for gaming than any Ryzen CPU by the way), your average framerates would go up by 10-20 but your peaks would stay relatively the same. No way does a Ryzen 5 bottleneck a GTX 1070.

Getting solidly over 144FPS consistently for AAA gaming requires a very powerful card and a powerful CPU to keep the averages up and not slow down things.

Getting a higher end Ryzen will not do much for you in terms of increased FPS. Games don't care about more cores. You get something like 10% more performance opting for a Ryzen 7 at best.

I was planning to buy intel first, but since i’m not going to overclock i got advised to buy the 1600.

There is the occasional game where the R5-1600 struggles to maintain 144 fps minimums, so if investing $500-$600 or more for a gpu today, I'd go for the 8600K/8700K....

I think i might be going for the I7 8700 because i found a really good value prebuilt pc with it

Intel Core i5 processors from 8th generation (8400 and 8600k) or 7th such as the 7700k or 7600k are better as gaming processors then Ryzen. Right now the perfect gaming CPU is the Core i5 8600k which cleanly outperforms even Ryzen 7 1700X and also costs less. 8700k would be arguably overkill.

On low settings average FPS predicted with GTX 1070 and R5 1600:

Overwatch: 209 FPS
Siege: 110 FPS
BF1 : : 71 FPS
Rocket League: : 200 FPS

On low settings average FPS predicted with a Core i7 7700k and GTX 1070:

Overwatch: 249 FPS
Siege: around 130 FPS
BF1: : 115-125 FPS
Rocket League: : 225 FPS at least

Take these numbers a grain of salt. There is not as many benchmarks on low settings with the GTX 1070 so the data is a bit iffy. Most people who buy that card use it on high settings.

As you can see it really depends on the game. Current graphics cards have issues getting above 144FPS for AAA games like BF1 unless you have an expensive setup like 1080 Ti. For 60Hz, the GTX 1070 hits the 60FPS mark for every game.
