Question Is the Ryzen 5 2400g right for me?

Looking to upgrade from my Phenom II x4. I want to move to AM4 socket board and a good enough CPU to do gaming.

Video card will be getting upgraded as well (RX 570 probably).

I'd love to use my current ram if possible (16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)).

It seems like the 2400g would be a good starter AM4 chip, but I'm not sure if I'm paying extra for the integrated graphics which I don't plan on using.

Im looking for something that can play Elite Dangerous reasonably well.

you could get the r5 1600 and get 2 more cores that you will use for less money.
cannot use DDR3 with AM4 CPU's

As with anything, progress makes the old, obsolete.

You currently have DDR3. AM4 uses DDR4, so it's physically not compatible. Sorry.

If getting a gpu, then an APU with half of its space under the hood dedicated to an igpu that won't get used, well that's not a wise choice.

You'd get considerably better overall performance from a R5 1600 than the R5 2400G. But with current pricing, the R5 2600 is a better value, if slightly more expensive than the 1600.

You will need new ram, and Ryzens get a really good performance boost from faster ram in dual channel. A 3200MHz kit with 2x8Gb is the preferred value selection.

An APU makes no sense if you will be using a discrete GPU from the start. You should be able to get a Ryzen 2600 for about the same price, get that instead, far better CPU: 50% more cores, Zen+ instead of Zen CPU architecture, 4X as much L3 cache and higher clocks.
