My friend had almost decided to go with a Ryzen 3400G - intended to be upgraded with an RTX 3000 series GPU (or similar) followed by a Ryzen 5000 series CPU over the next year.

Ryzen 5 3400G - ₹ 13,755

paired with
Asus TUF Gaming X570 Plus Wifi - 20,125

However, he just discovered that the Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G is available. Since the 4650G is Zen 2, he can save money on the motherboard and go with a B550 motherboard instead.
Ryzen 5 Pro 4650G - ₹ 18,135

paired with
Asus TUG Gaming B550M Plus Wifi - ₹ 15,965

He's going to get a Discrete Graphics Card in the next few months anyway, so switching to the 4650G gives him more time before he needs to upgrade to a 5000 series processor.

Does the switch make sense? I'm confused because there are very few reviews of the 4650G and hasn't been talked about much.

Solution
Thanks, that helps. But is it safe? It doesn't seem to come in an AMD box, so would warranty be a problem?
What about motherboard compatibility? Since the processor is so new, is it possible it will need a BIOS update to boot with the 4650G?
It is safe to buy considering you are buying it from a trusted seller however;
theres an issue since these are OEM processor they do not come in good box like the 3400G it will be in a small box and cpu cooler will come in another box along with cpu, they will come with three years warranty, about mobo chipset it should run in the 500 series chipset without bios update(cant confim but i have seen it in mobo cpu compatibility page of the B550 chipset mobo gigabytes in specific).Even im...

Why to get a ryzen 5 if he's about to upgrade to a ryzen 5000 series and why to build a pc now if he's about to get a new cpu and dgpu??? Why to increase pain of swapping out stuff?? If going for a new pc either wait for 5000 series or get 4650G if he's about to install dgpu get R5 3600. However he can get 4650 and install a dgpu for but then again upgrading to a 5000 series makes no sense.

Because he wants something usable now, and doesn't have the money to buy a 5000 series CPU or a good GPU at the moment. The CPU will be upgraded maybe a year from now. The GPU in maybe 3-6 months.

Then go for ryzen 5 4650G and then get a dgpu no need to to swap to 5000 series unless he requires a 8+ core cpu. The 4650G is similar to R5 3600 a bit slower but not by alot so and that is also because it has a igpu, ill recommend R5 4650G with a dgpu later but again swapping to 5000 series makes no sense.

An alternative would be a i5 10400 with B460 the igpu wont be good as ryzen's APU however you'll get in a good box, similar performance to R5 3600x and should not be an issue for a normal use for gaming a GPU is necessary.
