Is the software necessary to install on the Toshiba Canvio Desk 3TB External Drive

Do I have to install the software that comes with this external drive? Can I instead set my backup schedule and preferences from the Control Panel as usual? Also, I have the smaller Toshiba 465 GB external drives and I usually just save my files on them rather than my C drive. Can I do the same with this larger external drive?
