Question Is there a decent free video coverter?

Years ago I used to use a free version of AnyVideoConverter which was very good. You could convert MP4 into MPEGs etc. I've just downloaded the latest version but it doesn't do much. Could anyone recommend a free video converter that's a s good as the old style AVC one. Am I right in guessing there's no decent free ones anymore though. Thanks.

PS. I forgot to say I used to use AVC as I collect old movies especially from the early 1930s, but theres a few that I still can't buy officially, but there's public domain copies online which are okay until official ones come along.

Also, there is Avidemux. I use mostly this to encode to h264/x265 or when I just want to extract some few seconds from a large video file without re-encoding.

Thanks for the replies! I have managed to install an old version of AVC which looks like the one I had years ago, but if things don't work out I'll try your suggestions instead.
