Rig:
Thinkpad W530, 16GB
Storage: 1tb Main, 1tb Secondary (DVD replaced with a hdd caddy)

I want to make these two drives secondary, and have a SSD OS/boot.
I heard there was a way by substituting the NIC card for the SSD but cannot find how to do that

  1. What would be the best SSD for this setup? Link?
  2. Instructions for Video that show this. As long as wi-fii works, the NIC I do not use

thanks

Solution
nice.
couple things I want to keep the 2 x 1TB drives - one in the main, and one in the caddy(originally the DVD drive bay). I want to put a SSD in somewhere - so will have 3 drives. Optoin #1 looks interesting, if I read it correctly it will allow for 2 drives? I understand (sorta) what RAID is, but never really got into it.

EDIT:
Took a closer look at option #1, that might be what I am looking for. But it would seem I would loose the 1TB drive. Is that correct? Or buy a 1TB SSD

Yes, you have to replace something to make space for the M.2 adapter.

Were you looking at the 2.5" SSDs like the 2.5" HDDs like you already have or just the M.2/NVME SSD style? The 2.5" SSDs are pretty cheap till Monday. You could put the 2.5" HDD that's in the DVD slot in an external case and run it in a USB 3.0 motherboard slot.

laptops would only have up to 2 ports for storage devices like HDD's. your only options would be to replace one of your HDD's with an SSD

as was stated already there are a lot of sales on sata 2.5" SSD drives right now so you should be able to find one with 1TB of storage for a good price

if you don't want to lose one of your 2 existing drives then your only option is an external one

HI thanks for all the great suggestions!!
So got all my "toys" and here is what I finally went with:

SSD SAMSUNG 860 QVO (sata 6gb/s)

32GB RAM (some offname brand)

The 1TB I kept in the dvd caddy. and the 1TB SSD was used to replace the HDD 1TB. Only thing missing, is to replace the MOBO with a K2000M (I have the K1000M, still does great, but while I am upgrading.. )

So now I have an extra 1TB HDD, and 16GB ram LOL
(prob shove it in another laptop or sell it)

What do you guys think? Any recommendations on the K2000M or is that the best I can do for this model?
