Question Is there a way to figure out what is causing a DirectX error?

Hello!

I've recently started to get a DirectX error in some game titles, but not all. For example every time, and I do mean literally every time, I try to play Need for Speed: Heat, the game crashes within the first race, from Tutorial. I've posted below the error I get.



But in other game titles, like for example Forza Motorsport 7, I can play for hours (and have played) without getting this error. And the game settings for both game titles are maxed, I know, pretty amazing that a 1080ti can still hold and produce over 60 FPS.

I have the latest nVidia driver, latest Windows 10 updates. I have other game titles in which I get the same DirectX error, for example Divinity Original Sin 2, and some other game titles in which I don't, for example Grim Dawn.

Is there a way to figure out what is causing this?

use ddu uninstaller and reinstall the latest graphics driver

to have a look what the problem could be:
run userbenchmark.com and post the http link of your result, e.g. https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/28977730

check windows integrity
open the command prompt as administrator and type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Also completed the DISM procedure.

Will do a clean boot later and check again.

Alright, checked the drive with SeaTools, since it's a Seagate, all was fine with the basic tests.

Also did a clean boot and ran the game, crashed again

All that remains is to do a DDU uninstall.

do you use the original cables which were delivered with this specific model?

All power connectors are plugged in the GPU

eventually disable RAM cache on the seagate drive

check the Intel drives as well, eventually update the firmware of these

Yes I use the original cables, as well as all the connectors are plugged in the GPU.

I have the Gigabyte Aorus Xtreme edition of the 1080ti.

I will do the followings next:

You can avoid this error by locking the game at 30 FPS. Open Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings. Select the game from the list and set vertical sync to “Adaptive half refresh-rate”.
Start the game and disable in-game v.sync and set the display mode at Fullscreen and the game will be locked at 30 FPS. This will reduce the load on both the GPU and the CPU resulting in much more stable performance.

As well as disabling RAM cache and remove my 2nd monitor (it's a 1440p also).

Hey there,

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread but maybe this will come in handy for other people. Just to reiterate, I kept getting all these DirectX errors when playing certain games, but not all and I think this is the confusing part. For example I was able to play for hours the following games:

World of Tanks
Forza Motorsport 7
Wasteland 3
Wolcen
Grim Dawn
Starcraft 2
Etc...

And I honestly gave up. I was so sure that I have a faulty GPU, especially after seeing a JayzTwoCents YouTube video about a GPU that was crashing inside Cyberpunk, that I was actively looking for an upgrade.

But yesterday I tried moving the GPU from the pcie x16 slot to a x4 slot just to see how it goes. Don't know why I didn't tried this before because it got fixed! Apparently there's something wrong with my pcie x16 slot on the motherboard.

This is a very strange scenario where some games would run fine at 1440p max settings, high refresh rate, and some wouldn't. And to make matters worse, some games weren't even that demanding, like Mutant Year Zero crashed as well...

Anyway, TLDR: faulty pcie x16 slot can crash games. However, the rest of the motherboard features work fine.
