Is there a way to find out what SATA version/speed the motherboard supports ?

I have 2 laptops, the first one has the Serial ATA/600 interface [according to specs on amazon.com] which is SATA3 6Gb/s.

the second one is a bit old and I couldn't find a spec for it, however I ran the crucial scanner and it tells me this : Storage: SATA 3 - 6Gb/s

I am wondering if there is a way to check SATA3 compatibility ?

I also checked the HDD itself for the second laptop and it is SATA 2 3Gbs, so what does my mothersupport ? SATA2 or SATA3 ?

What is the laptop? Either way it is backward compatible.

SATA is backwards compatible so SATA 3 drives will work on SATA 2 laptops and vice versa.
If you want to verify just fo the sake of iot what teh laptop supports you can run CPUZ, see what chipset the MB on it has and google that.

It makes no difference to hdd performance but you can easily figure it out from what cpu you have.

It would if he puts in a sata 3 ssd on a sata 2 port I believe...

If you do some research on the laptop you should be able to find what motherboard is in it and from there what sata version it supports.

As reedo stated, the only real noticeable difference is if you put a sata 3 SSD into a sata 2 port. Then the motherboard would be a bottleneck.

Yes, a high end SATA SSD will max out around 200MB/s on a SATA II port, but most of the time a system doesn't need that much throughput. Still much faster than a hard drive.

There are very few situations where the ssd would even max the speed so for most, even putting a ssd on sata 2 makes no difference. But he did say hdd so I only said hdd.

You've got sata 3. You can always look at something like crystaldiskinfo.
