Is there a way to trick a monitor that is 1600 x 900 to appear 1920 x 1080?

I have a laptop I am using as a television. I have it connected to the TV at all times and I control it with a wireless keyboard and mouse. I'm able to watch Netflix and pretty much do anything else this way.

The problem is the max resolution on the laptop is 1600 x 900 and the TV is 1920 x 1080, so the image is always smaller than what the TV is capable of. Is there a way to trick the laptop to have a 1920 x 1080 resolution when it only goes up to 1600 x 900?

I have another laptop that's 1920 x 1080 and fills out the TV screen when I plug it in, so I know it's capable of it.

Any help would be appreciated.



The laptop in question is a Toshiba Satellite L675.

I think I found the solution from chomic over at the url linked below. I'm going to try it, see how it goes. Here's the solution posted:



if you have AMD card do this ; go to ccc vision center --> my VGA displays --> properties VGA display --> unbox the EDI thing --> maximum res. 1920x1080.

had the same problem with my monitor, resolution didnt go above 1400x900 ( got 1680x1050 ) fixed with above

go to the windows display settings and set the tv as the main monitor, it should then allow you to set the res at 1080p. This will disable the laptops screen however, but all the desktop icons etc will appear on the tv.
The second option would be to set it as 'extended desktop' and not as 'cloned' (which i suppose you are currently running it), this setup will keep all the icons on the laptop screen however and everything will open up on the laptop's screen by default, but it will also allow the higher res to be used on the tv.

Hi, Kari. thanks for your reply. I think you're right about the cloned monitor. I went into Windows resolution and went into Advanced Settings.

I then clicked on the Monitor tab and unchecked the box seen here:

I clicked Apply and the screen went wide, baby! This required me to have the laptop connected to the TV already. I was trying to do this while the laptop was disconnected from it so it wasn't detecting the TV at all. Thanks again, Kari!
