Question Is there and performance loss putting a Core I5 8500 in a cheap motherbaord?

I did see an article where an i7 8700 had reduced performance on a cheap motherboard because the mobo's power/current limits were set too low for the CPU to boost fully. I think they may have been able to fix it simply be editing the limits in the BIOS. Can't find the article now unfortunately.

That CPU should be less power hungry than an 8700 though, so I'm not sure that'd still be a concern.

You should be fine, the 8500 isn't too power hungry. 65w cpu on motherboard that supports up to 95w.

I would be hesitant to throw a 9900k or even an 8700k in there though. VRM temps and such can become an issue for some people which hurts your clock speeds.
