Is there any play hope?

Before I spend any more $$, what hope is there in an old geek playing these
games on Wondows XP?
I'm one of I'm sure many who played Ultima as it was released. I regret
terribly not keeping my box goodies and maps :) (and my certificates from
Lord British!!! To this day, when I play any PC game, I kill no creatures
who don't attack me first. If a deer wanders by, I consider Ultima IV and
leave it be..my children look at me like I'm nuts 😉 I chose to steal now
and again in circmstances I decide are right. So much of how I play is from
Ultima it amazes me. Recently, I've become onsessed with replaying the whole
series form the start. Yes, I'm aware of the silliness our older two
dimensional characters and black and white dungeons will seem, but I don't
care, I want to play! My brother overwrote my U3 saves and I had to play the
final battle as HIS character, a wrong that must be righted 😉 I want to
find the guy who talks about hotel California so I can remind myself why a
screenshot of ultima comes into my head when I hear the song..I wanna see
the silly icon for villages such as Paws :) I want to remember why I always
look at whirlpools with suspicions. I want to find the balloon for the first
time again :)
Silly, huh, but I'll let the dream die if the idea of a not-so technical
geek trying to make these games work is impossible. I am willing to go to
Ebay and buy my own copies of the games again, I have no wish to beat the
system, but if I am to invest, I want to know what my chances are 😉 I'm not
stupid, but I'm not all that technical either and I think my hubby isn't
going to help this current obsession 😉

U7 and U7/2 plays perfectly with Exult, and VDMsound and DOSBox will take
care of most of the others.

You'll find links for these prgs. on the "patches" section of my HP (see
..sig).

Happy gaming! 🙂

There are also a few patches for the Underworlds that will allow
them to run natively in XP or 2000, otherwise they tend to crash.

The only other one is U9, which should just work if your machine
is capable of running XP, although you may need to upgrade it to
1.18 or 1.19-unofficial.

They hang NTVDM by trying to access the port 61 (or is it 64?) to play with
keyboard LEDs. The i8042 emulation code in NTVDM has a bug and hangs waiting
on the kernel event forever if the 16bit code does this.

I designed this patch around late 2001 or so and wrote the description on
how to patch the EXE manually with HIEW or such, and another guy made the
auto-patcher program. Both must be available on the web.

Aaahhhh!! Dirty Diapers! That is a virus! It formatted my harddrive and
screwed my dog!!

just kidding. :)

I can't play UW or UW2. Getting them to run isn't much trouble really.
It's just that I'm too spoiled by the newer FPS type games. The mouse
look standard is hard to do without. 🙁

I can get UW2 running under Win2000Pro, SP4. But not very well. It's
installed on my laptop, which I don't use that often.

A good thing Tolkiens' books and Shakespeares' plays aren't unreadable
today because of new OS'es...

I found and bookmarked a wonderful FAQ which I hope, along with the
suggested ideas will help. I worry I'm not techie enough, though. I did get
Dungeon Mster up today with hubby finding Dosbox for sound. my 10 year old
is happily enthralled though HORRIFIED at the concept of making one's own
maps..on GRAPH PAPER no less 😉

Tell him that that's how Heroes of RPG used to do it in the ancient times
of the C64. 🙂

I think making our own maps made the game last a heck of a lot longer 😉

*blinks* 'perfectly'? Have they gotten the party formation working? What
about the storm-switched objects (and related conversations, etc.) in
Serpent Isle?

Well, it seems to work for me?

Well, I happily played ultima 4 for awhile and today installed the U9 game i
bought off Ebay. Sadly, my computer iwll play the first movie (of the pillar
rising) but after that it goes to another screen I can jst see of the side
of a house...but it freezes at this point. I installed the 18 and 19
patch-am using windows XP and an ATP card.
The problem is my ocmputer has been *ill* since I accidently unplugged the
power card and I am afriad of it a little...the blue screen of death appears
when I reboot about 15% of the time since the loss of power. SO, I am afraid
to *experiemnt* right now. But, maybe when I was less afraid of tweaking :)
I'ld love to try!!
The Dosbox program worked GREAT for sound in ultima 4!

You might want to run chkdsk c: /f from a command prompt to fix the
harddrive. It will require a reboot.

Then after that's done run sfc /scannow from a command prompt to fix any
missing or corrupted files. It will likely require your XP disk and the
location of your SP1 and SP2 files.

Might also want to reinstall the video drivers, but then again in 1999 did
Origin even test ATI cards with U9?

Although this is a bit beyond the scope of the newsgroup, maybe if you
could write down the information during the BSOD (for example, the numbers
in the STOP message, any reference to files, etc) and a few people here
might be able to track down the cause.

It's sweet of you to offer :) The last BSOD showed an error in the
ati*somethung*.dll and when back to windows brought up a message saying the
computer had recovered from a serious error and said it was a ATI error and
sent us to a link where you could download an updated graphics driver, which
we did and there have been no BSOD since then, but I must be suffering PTSS
as I quiver the whole time if it needed rebooting (which it did whenever
that U9 intro screen locked up the system ).
I decided to play Legacy of the Anicents instead which runs fine but the PC
version is pretty dreadful color-wise 😉
