I own a Macbook Pro and am looking for additional storage. Is there any point in buying an external Thunderbolt drive? For example, I was considering purchasing the MiniStation Thunderbolt, but aren't these severely limited/bottle-necked by the 5400 RPM drive inside? Would I be better served spending less money on the WD Passport drive using USB 3?

Solution
If you can use USB3, I would recommend it. the cables and devices are substantially cheaper.

The biggest reason I can see for purchasing a thunderbolt drive would be if you owned a pre 2012 macbook and didn't have USB3 support, or you were using a multiple storage device NAS and needed more bandwidth.
