Is there any reason why I cannot manually switch on the battery status icon

I wish to show the battery status but the system icon is set at "off" and will not allow me to select "on"

Check the vendor support site for a power manager driver and install that, see if that helps. Also make sure you have the rights to do so on the system, if it's a work system the options may have been locked.
