Is there any use of upgrading my gpu, if I have a 5y old cpu?

I've read somewhere that if you have a bad cpu, you wont get much use out of a new gpu, since it would botleneck it or something.

CPU: i5 2500
current GPU: GTX 750ti

that's not a bad CPU at all, you could get like a RX 480 or GTX 1060 and would be fine.
