Hello there,

I have a problem. My PSU (chieftec 750w 14cs) doesn't have all cables that i would need. Only MB, CPU and one for SATA drives. I have my gpu 6 pin connecter through SATA to that basic connector to 6 pin. And i'm going to buy GPU (used Asus r9 280x) which has 8 pins and i am wondering if i get same "basic" to 8 pin adapter will it burn my PSU or not? Also, maybe these extra holes for wires isn't that neccesary, or do they give different voltages for parts like GPU etc. I'm pretty raw about all of it.

If your PSU does not have the cables pre-installed for those connections then it’s best to not rig up a bunch of adapters to make it work. The safest bet is to buy a new PSU with the necessary cables and wattage you need. You can find some decent units with everything you need for under $100 on Newegg and Amazon.

Chieftec is a really low end PSU. There reason it does not have an 8pin connector with the 6pin is because it cant actually handle powering any card. That 750w is a completely bogus number just like the 2000w car amp you buy for $60 out of the back of a white van.

The biggest concern with cheap PSUs is that when they die they take parts out with them. So you will not only burn up your PSU, but also fry your GPU and Mobo. There has even been several cases where cheap PSUs spark and cause house fires.

originally that PSU have 4 cables with 6+2pins. but it happened that i got this psu used like most of my PC parts. and atm it's working for me longest from all PSU i ever had including FSP blue storm which is a good psu according to reviews and some others that i don't recall. well i heard one of the solution ould be to use adapters. but i'm a bit scared to put all of power onto one cable. that's why im asking.

P.S. a friend suggested to buy a modular cable and that's all. i guess it wouldn't matter if i'd get some other manufacturers cable, not particularly chieftec?

EDIT:
wanted to state that after i got new case (it puts PSU on the bottom) i runs really cool, i wouldn't think it could catch fire unless like one little part in it just blows up.

rig consists of:

GIGABYTE HD 7790 OC 2GB
FX-8350 @ 4.4GHz
x2 500Gb HDD
120 SSD
x4 4Gb bones of RAM
and couple of case coolers
