Is there anything bad with this Dell laptop purchase?

Gentlemen (and ladies),

First let me say that I have learned more from these forums here than from any other source...ever.

Anyway, for Christmas, I was hoping to purchase a new laptop. Apparently, building your own laptop by yourself is much more difficult than building a PC, even a high-end one with RAID and special cooling. So, I suppose that I'll be buying one.

Purpose: playing DVD movies, internet surfing, word processing, spreadsheets, Powerpoint presentations, e-mail, and other office duties. I might do some AutoCAD 2D design work, perhaps. Some light gaming would be nice. There will be no Call of Duty 2 at max. settings or anything like that.

Requirement: 17" monitor (for viewing DVD movies)

Future upgrades: Don't care about upgrading

Here is a build from Dell's website:

$1,699 (I have a 15% discount for being a home customer or something to that effect.)

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5200 (1.60GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB)
Windows® XP Professional
LCD PANEL 17 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife™
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory
Integrated Audio
9-cell Primary Battery and 9-cell additional Lithium Ion Battery
Dell Nylon Deluxe Carrying Case
Dell Wireless 1390b/g (54Mbps)
No other software (I'll add it myself later)

1) Hammer me with the critiques and make it hurt. 😀

2) Also, if you think that I could build a laptop with relative ease and save $$$ using Newegg or Zipzoomfly, then please let me know.

3) Should I worry about add-on cooling for the CPU (which would require me to open the case and mess around with the guts of the laptop)?

Thanks,
Jim

This would do more than you are wanting for significantly less. It is not a core duo. It has dual core amd and will provide what you are requiring out of it for a decent price. Goes down to about 800-900 for the 15.4" screen.

$1,099.99

I can kindof tell by your post you want something that you just buy and is done. For what you want to do that DELL is fine. The thing about DELL is, that no matter how much people want to make out that they are "one negative thing or another", they are the king of low end systems for a reason. They have a system and process in place to support and handle problems that arise more frequently with lower end systems then higher end ones.

The last poster also mentioned an HP, that is a decent machine also, and can definately do everything you are requiring. You are not going to need any additional cooling on those machines.

With the max strain on the system being Some light gaming would be nice. There will be no Call of Duty 2 at max. settings or anything like that.
, either card will handle your requirements. The nice thing about the DELL is that you can always upgrade he video card in the future if need be.

You said you had 15% off coupons, here is a 20% off, if you wait, I'm sure you can do much better than that right before or after Christmas when Dell's quarter is ending.

INSPIRON NOTEBOOK Coupon: This offer is not available on any other desktop system, and can not be combinable with other dollars off, percentage off or mail-in rebate offers. Online coupons not valid on the XPS series notebooks. Only one coupon may be applied per cart at checkout.

Thank you for this information. Such a laptop would indeed save me some $$$ without sacrificing too much performance.

Wonderful! Thank you for the coupon reference.

And, I certainly can wait until right before or right after Christmas to save even more $$$. I'm not trying to be cheap; just a good steward of the money with which God has blessed me.

That's what it's all about.

That HP compared to the DELL is really like comparing apples to oranges.

Factor in that the DELL 1705/1710 is an Inspiron 9400 which is a stripped down DELL XPS that you can upgrade the video to 7900 class cards, and you have a pretty decent system with some potential should someone want to put the effort and extra money into it.

Yes, I had noticed all those differences. Honestly, I was still leaning toward the more expensive Dell laptop because of those differences.

Then, I kicked in that 20% coupon and BAMMM!!! The $1,699 Dell laptop dropped to $1,520. Yeah, buddy!

Hmmm...I do have more $$$ left over and I am underbudget a little...maybe an upgrade here and there. :)

Now, all I need to do is create a fictitious business name which will allow me to get the Dell business support package (so that I can speak to support people who are not in India) and I'm set.

Thanks, pal.

You know what I would recommend? Getting the smallest HD you canfrom DELL, buy a 100 gig 7,200 from newegg and just replacing it yourself.

If you don't want to do that then a 7,200 HD from DELL is going to give you the most performance bang for your buck in that system. Next thing I would look at would be the CPU. Other than that it has everything you need.

Good ideas. Thank you.

I agree with KN's comment on the CPU. I chose a better processor and am aware of hard drive bottlenecks for laptop computers. The dell upgrades during the production of Yonah made me select a core duo @ 1.66 Ghz with 667 FSB, and a 7,200 rpm drive. I am happy with the computer, and when I performed a similar configuration as you have shown for dell I would warn you of lower Front side bus (533 Ghz) Core 2 (merom) cpu's that are being offered by dell of which an upgrade price is very steep--which is different from the ~ $50 upgrade from a core solo and ~ $80 upgrade to a core duo T2400 @ 1.83 Ghz when I configured my E1405.

I don't know what affect the FSB would have on the meroms, but if I had 64 bit capability I would like optimum data transfer. Also intel does not even list the core 2 T5200 @ 1.6 Ghz and 533 FSB on this site: link.

Hmmm...I checked my build on Dell's website. It seems that moving the motherboard and memory from 533 MHz to 677 MHz would cost me an additional $214 (including the tax increase).

With 533 MHz...$1,638

With 677 MHz...$1,851

Hmmm...is $214 worth this increase in speed? Ahhh...screw it. It's Christmas. OK. 677 MHz it is. 😀

I wouldn't have been able to do this without that 20% coupon (thanks KN) and this extra knowledge. I owe you. Merry Christmas!

It will make the difference, and it is the one thing that will be a Pita to upgrade later, to the point of not being worth it AFTER you get the system. I think it is a good choice.

Is that the total before the 20% off Jim? Don't forget to add tax and sometimes shipping (sometimes not) with DELL and tell us what the bottom line was.

KN,

The Dell quote of $1,851 for the 677 MHz-speed system is the bottom line, including 20% coupon, tax, and shipping (free!).

I will probably save another $100 or so by dropping the operating system back to Windows XP Media Center instead of Windows XP Professional since a friend of mine wants to give me a legal, licensed copy of Windows XP Professional that he is no longer using.

Just so everyone knows, Dell is moving all U.S. support back to the U.S. So in a few months you won't have to worry about calling India anyway =-)

I might tend to trust dell on this. Even if you don't, order everything from them from the business sector. My dad's business runs on dell computers and when he calls for support 90% of the time the person speaks fluent english and actually sounds american. Any way, to the OP the dell system does look like the way to go. Also, keep looking on the web for dell coupons you might find one for more than 20%. Just google dell coupons.

For about $280, Dell will sell you the standard business 3 yr support plan with gold tech support - gold tech support is US based, for the most part - but not at night always.

I resent that Dell asks it's US customers to buy the right to speak to US based tech people. If you don't pay up - you're in India or the Philippines, or God knows where - on hold.

Actually Jake is right. I happen to know the person that developed the "assett tag" tracking system and integrated it into DELL's support system. He is part of a boutique system builder firm and the stories that guy could tell you about the flags and hooks built into the DELL support system phone & database are UN-REAL.

Support for business customers is better because DELL doesn't cut them these outrageous deals, they tell you they do, but there is a reason that the S.B. department at DELL rarely puts out a coupon, and if they do it is meager.

Even at INSTITUIONAL corporate level, the prices suck. I have a friend at MetLife and they have a HUGE account, and the prices he got were higher than if I went to the website and configured it myself, but of course, that INCLUDED the support that you couldn't strip off his order. Like Jake said, when you PAY for gold level support, they are there.

The person who started this thread though knows he can come to Tom's Hardware and I will pretty much support his DELL anyway so he isn't sweating it.

Not sure about the Biz site. I only deal with Consumer sales. On the consumer side when you pay for an extended warranty it just covers your hardware for a longer period of time it does not give you access to a different tech support line. Dell is moving all U.S. calls back over here due to the enormous amounts of complaints they have recieved. Also, we aren't telling everyone that, so it's hard for it to be propoganda if noones knows about it. Not hear to argue, just tryin to let everyone know there is a light at the end of the tunnel for all of us..... I call the same support line you do and deal with the same crap. Also, Jim, take that quote to a Dell Kiosk and tell one of the reps to beat that price and at over 1600 bucks he can take another $75 off the order at the very least. That will atleast cover some of your tax. Take care all =-)

On the consumer side when you pay for an extended warranty it just covers your hardware for a longer period of time it does not give you access to a different tech support line.

Look it, if you work for Dell, you know that anyone can order from Small Business and buy that 3 yr standard business plan with the (US based) Gold Tech support. Dell doesn't care if you run a small business out of your back bedroom or not - if you get to that "site" (tab), you'll find "free shipping" is common + the $248 warranty that includes, not just hardware, but an expedited tech support line that connects (much of the time) to the US tech people. You can buy just a 3 yr hardware warranty that leaves you at the mercy of where ever Dell wants to send you - and you can bet your sweet a$$ that it's India or the Philippines.

I'm always sceptical of claims of future improvements down the road just before an anticipated major sales season. I believe Dell moved all tech support back to the US several years ago, only to go back to India sometime later.

My 1st computer (years ago) was a Dell - this was my experience and I know, 1st hand, that it's true.

If Dell is going to move tech back to the US - then they should announce it before the holidays and not rely on seeding forums and boards with rumors.

Hey DELL rep, can you take a memo for me to DELL corporate?

Dear Mikey DELL,

One of your reps came on the Tom's Hardware forums saying you were moving your support back to America. True or False (circle one).

Aside from Alienware stealing the Assassin model name, you adding the T7600 unlocked G processor months after Killer Notebooks offered unlocked processors, you sending 15 notebook covers to the K|N custom shop so you can duplicate the custom skinning process; are you now sending reps to Tom's Forums to do "damage control" at the grass roots level? YES or NO (circle one)

Are you going to keep cheating off my papers? YES or NO (circle one)
You and your puppet Alienware have NO ORIGINAL IDEAS and STEAL everything you can to try to portray yourselves as innovators when DELL sells more low-end systems globally than any computer company, making it the Goliath of the industry.

How far you have fallen from your days at University of Texas when you were hiding the computers you built in your shower when your parents came to see you.
Since I totally hate your guts, I'll meet you to fight after school at 3:15. Are you gonna be there? YES or NO (circle one)

Tough year for the soft-spoken Texan who founded the world's largest PC maker. Shares of his Dell Inc. down 60% in past 12 months, putting his 9.4 million stock options underwater. In August company recalled 4.1 million computer batteries after a video of an exploding laptop set Internet ablaze. Company overhauling customer service division after struggling with complaints. Also lowered PC prices, dropped Intel-only policy.

You better put on your game face DELL, cause this ain't gonna cut it at the bike racks: You should turn on some Ozark Mountain Daredevils, If you wanna get to heaven and practice tappin' today.

I wanted to let you know I tried to order an MP3 player the first week of November for my girlfriends birthday. The order process was simple, right up until I got an email saying you couldn't get me an iPod until the second week in December!

I replied to the email and half and hour later it bounced back telling me the email address you sent my order confirmation from didn't accept emails. There was no other address on there to cancel the order.

I tried to call, and after 20 minutes of voice mail maze fun and holding I got to a rep. They couldn't do anything to cancel the order so I got transferred, waited another 15 minutes and finally, after talking to a person in India, got the order cancelled.

I wish I could say that all I had to say was, "Please cancel this order", but I actually had to explain WHY about 3 times and go through what I considered the 3rd degree to simply cancel an order that YOU couldn't fulfill in any sort of a reasonable time frame. I bought the Apple iPod at MacMall for cheaper, with custom engraving, and I got it in 3 days.
