Why are people still using 3DMark2000? Is there something wrong with 3DMark2001? Just wondering cause I'm seeing at least as many 3DMark 2000 results posted as 3DMark2k1. Even reciewers are using 2k.

What gives?

I AM Canadian.

Maybe the lower marks they get from 3DMark2001 look pathetic. If they run 3DMark2000, the scores that they get are very much higher, look very impressive. Maybe just maybe.

It don't come easy.......not always.

3dmark 2k uses directx 7 and 3dmark2k1 uses directx 8. There are some issues with the Kyro II and directx 8 so that may be one reason. Another reason is that 3dmark2k1 is meant to last a year so with it's release the cards of today can't handle them too well.

those issues with kyro are in the past.

directx8.1 beta build 620 have great support with kyro 2...

it never was a problem...
microsodt disabled some features of kyro in directx8 because then didn't have any kyro on their's labs for testing so for more compatibility they choose to disable those features..
now they (microsoft) see that kyro don't have any problems so directx8.1 beta build 620 (I am waiting for the final release of directx 8.1 ) have full support for kyro 2

3dmark2k1 is a bad way (even 3dmark2k) to benchmark a 3d card...
this bench don't give any more score for a card that have good enviroment bumpmapping but considers others features more important... that is very subjective...

T&L is one of the most important features for 3dmark what this mean is that with a non T&L card it's your cpu that are being tested not your 3dcard...

3dMark 2001 must use Direct X 8 and is made for cards fully DX8 compatable. The Geforce2 GTS can't even run many of the test, and the Radeon does only a little better. It is therefore not made for the majority of graphics cards.
Most of these newer benchmarks test features which are not available in most games, even newer titles, so the test does not even reflect capability of current cards to run current games. Therefor 2000 is more applicable to performance in current games.
Many people cannot run DX8 properly because of a lack of support for their hardware. Certain sound cards and video cards are suceptable to DX8 incompatability.
Because of compatability issues, DX8 can slow many systmes down, resulting in a loss of performance in games. Since it is very difficult to uninstall DX8, installing it just to run 2001 would be foolhardy for many configurations, as it would hurt game performance.

3dMark 2001 is not applicable to most hardware and most games. As hardware and games progress, it will become more aplicable. It is a good test for the future compatability/performance of a system, not the current comatability/performance.
