i5 2500k OC to ~ 4.3 - 4.5mhz

3 7200 RPM Hard Drives (1 spinpoint F3 and 2 drives from old computer)
Sound Card
4 120mm case fans, 1 120mm CPU cooler fan

aaaaand...

Two GTX 570s?

What if I OC the 570? Or 2 6970s instead?

I did try searching around the internet (answer uncertain) and using this PSU calculator: http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

This calculator recommended 849w with 20% "capacitor aging" and 4.5 OC on the CPU, so no OC on GPUs I suppose. But I don't know, I'd really like to hear some real info instead just a calculator like this. Plus I saw this very same calculator linked from a PSU manufacturer's site, which makes me wonder if its rigged to recommend high wattage in order to bump sales.

Thank you

EDIT: Two 6970s came it at 875w, not sure why but I was under the impression that they would be less than the 570s. Probably thinking of 6950s.

Yes, an 850W PSU will be fine with your crossfire or SLI setup. The main concern is the 12v rails. It's better to have a single 12v rail if you are pushing the PSU. And an XFX is of high enough quality (so they seem, I don't use them though) that it isn't going to be "over rated".

Hope it helps. And you will have plenty of room to OC your cards/proc./RAM.

I understand that all of those are objectively better than the XFX I posted, but they are also considerably more expensive.

Why do you recommend the extra expense? Is the original XFX inadequate?

Thanks

XFX are one of the better, lesser expensive GOOD PSU's. Personally I wouldn't buy one but that is because I LOVE my Corsair PSU's and wouldn't do anything else. I always consider the investment of it though. The XFX will be a nice, solid, powerful consumer grade unit that will get you plenty far in your adventures.

The XFX PSU that you have shown in the first build is very adequate. While it is only 80+ Bronze and not modular, it is still a highly recommended PSU.

XFX PSU's are sometimes overlook because of the brand, but the OEM is Seasonic which produce some of the best (if not the best) PSU's on the market. And at the 850W capacity, I have no doubt that this will do 2 x 570's and the rest of your system just fine.

If you want some further detailed reviews on this PSU, you can check out this review from JonnyGuru, and HardwareSecrets (some of the most reputable PSU reviewers)

Thank you everyone. I finished by build yesterday and all went fine.

Well, except maybe my application of thermal paste. I think I may have botched that. Oh, and I mistakenly installed windows on the wrong partition, so I get to redo that too.

That's what I get for pushing to 2 o'clock in the morning to finish.

But everything works, so I can now rest easy.

I wish I could select multiple "best answers", but I can't so puttsy gets it for being first.
