So I recently bought this PC from craigslist. I just want some thoughts on how well it will do against certain games such as DayZ, Saints Rows III, Minecraft, and other modern 3D games. Here are the specs:
- Intel Core 2 Q9400 Quad Core 2.66GHz
-8GB RAM
-NVIDIA GeForce GT 640
I'm all ears for answers and suggestions.

I tend to think you're on okay ground with that CPU.

Tom's recently updated with "Best Graphics Cards for the Money" and your card there got their entry level recommendation: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-2.html

It's okay, as an entry level gaming graphics card. If you're looking upgrade down the track, the video card would be top priority.

My advice would be to give it a go and see if you're happy with the performance. If you get to a point where it's not performing as you want, upgrade that GPU (make sure you power supply can support whatever you upgrade to) and you'll see a significant improvement.

Is this a decent gaming PC? Honestly, no, you have to spend around $1000-1500 for a decent gaming PC, using high end CPU and GPU. I'm guessing this PC was less.

Will it play some games? Yes, some, most new ones on low settings.

Was it good value? Depends on the price.

well, for future reference, if you're not familiar, seek advice first before you buy.

now to answer your question, back in it's day, a q9400 is decent esp if you oc, now, if you can oc, it should perform ok.
BUT, for the GPU, a 640 is a little on the low side. a 650Ti would be a better choice, anything lower is just slow in my opinion. well at least it's not a 610.

it should be ok on low (maybe some med) settings on less demanding games

this is pretty untrue to say the least. 1000-1500 will give you great performance and very high end specs. For the higher end of decent you need to spend 700 operating system included.

Quad core intel isnt all bad but its certainly a bit dated. Like mentioned already look into overclocking it, still as long as you are workin with the 640 there is no point in overclocking the CPU, as the GPU will hold you back too. I would say the GPU is worse than the CPU for most games tbh. 8GB RAM is good though...how much did u spend?
