Hi so my old crap pc only has a VGA connection. I just bought an acer h238hlbid monitor and was looking for a good converter. I found some on amazon which all had good reviews but I have one question. Will it look different than if I was using a regular hdmi cable? Also would VGA be a better option? Finally if the converter is better what one should I get?

Why would you be afraid? What is there to be afraid of? It's not like trying to do internal surgery on a person. It's just a bunch of computer parts. Very simple. Very easy. Any fourteen year old can install a graphics card without issue, regardless of gender. If you feel safer with an adapter, that's up to you, but it's a poor choice.

As far as how it will look, it will likely "look" the same regardless of how you connect it. In your case I'd probably recommend something like this item linked below. Cheaper type adapters are likely to be problematic and have quality or use issues.

What is the model of your PC and what is the model of the convertor. It might be a much better option to just install a low end graphics card as the display quality and graphics power will likely be better than your onboard graphics, if your motherboard supports it with a PCIe slot, plus quite often the adapters are cheap quality units that don't work well or are problematic. Expensive adapters are pointless as you can get a new GPU for the same or less which will allow you to natively output to the desired option whether it's VGA, HDMI, DVI or Displayport.

It's a hp pavillion. I have no idea what model and I would be deathly afraid to put a decent graphics card in there for fear of overheating. I can check for the slot but I doubt I will find one...
