Is this a good first time build? (FX-6350, GTX 970, 16gb...)

Solution
An i3 6100, beats out a FX 6300 in just about everything https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4dUCeF2jnU.

If you are going with such a high end card as the GTX 970, I would'nt pick anything else but an Intel i5 (preferably a 'k' series that can be overclocked), otherwise you wouldnt be letting the card reach its full potential. Plus AMD CPU's stutter a lot and struggle in many games that are CPU intensive like GTA 5 and ARMA 3.

Save your money and get an i5, you won't be dissappointed. An i5 outperforms a FX 8350, and an FX 8350 outperforms a FX 6300

Btw: I'm an FX 8350 owner who recently changed out to an i5 3570k and saw a huge performance increase in games. We are not biased towards intel, its just that AMD hasn't even released any...

I'd preferably not go with Skylake, seeing as I need to use DDR4 RAM. Also the EVO is a good enough cooler. Why is TH so biased towards Intel?

Intel especially skylake series consumes extremely low power. That i3 can show more performance than any fx so think a while. Ddr4 isn' show expensive. It shows in gaming same as ddr3, but faster in rendering. If you don't want ddr4 you can go with ddr3l which is supported by skylake. If you want and based I'll recommended you waiting for zen

We are not biased towards intel, its just that AMD hasn't even released any new high end CPU's since 2011!! The FX series is 4-5 years old now! Plus their single core performance is just shocking, there is literally no competition between Intel and AMD anymore.

Something like this is better I believe: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wmVrTW Only an extra $130 on top of what you had and you are getting a much better processor!

Your quite lucky in the US, the i5 isn't that expensive. In my country (Australia) the 4690k is $370 and GTX 970 is $500!
