It is not bad for a first build.. I would suggest different motherboard though, f.e. M5A99FX, as the 990FX chipset is MUCH better suited for overclocking and overclocking options are very good with fx 8350. I do not know the cpu cooler, so I cant judge there, but in general budget minded case, I would go with cooler master hyper 212+

If that stretches your budget, you can save some pounds on RAM, as you will not see much performance difference with 2400mhz vs standard 1600 or 1866 mhz.

How'd you do, pal?

Thats quite a great machine, isn't it?

IMHO, the power supply is a bit too much unless you're planning on big upgrades on the future. You could save money on it to grab more graphics performance.
I think that if it's gaming what you're aiming at, you could get a cheaper CPU and go for a stronger graphics card. It's almost always a wise decision.

All great choice. Nothing lacking in my opinion.

Some minor changer that you can consider :

Cheaper ASUS M5A97 R2.0 mobo, it only has 2 less USB2 ports, 2 less SATA ports and no firewire.
Use this comparison if you are not sure.

You can also get the FX 8320 to save a little more, it can easily be overclocked a little to match the 8350 as its the same CPU with just a lower clock.
Same thing goes for RAM, 2400MHz RAM is pointless actually. Get something like 1600MHz / 1866MHz from G.skill sniper range.

Lastly with these 2 above savings. Maybe you can get a better graphics card like the GTX770.

:D But all of these are purely up to you. Your choices are great.

is there much of a difference between the gtx 760 and 770?

You tell me? 21 percent @ 1080p. :D

Forgive me if I am wrong, but I believe the M5A97 R2.0 Evo R2.0 has a 6 + 2 Phase power design vs the M5A97 R2.0's 4 + 2 phase power design, so the evo would be a better overclocking board.

M5A97 (R2.0) 4+2
M5A97 EVO/PRO 6+2

You are perfectly correct, however the limitation of the 970 chipset is gonna limit it a lot anyway.
Besides, very few people actually overclock, and if a cheaper board increases graphics card performance by 21%, then it makes perfect sense.

At least that is my reasoning.

And one must add that a performance bonus of 21% (on Total War Shogun 2 we're talking about over 30%) is far more beneficial for a gamer than a overclocked CPU.
