Is this a good laptop or should I go with something different?

I really like the features and hardware from this model, especially paired with this price. I have only built my own PC and owned an HP laptop, so I don't know anything about Acer except that there are other brands that are a little better.

My question to you is: Should I get his bad boy or should I pay a little more for a quality brand with similar features?

Its not going to play high FPS games if thats your intent? The Nvida gpu is basically is the mobile version of the desktop GT 1030 gpu.

I would look this laptop up on Amazon and read the 1 and 2 star reviews. This will give you an idea on the build quality.
