Do you think this rig is overkill for 1080p gaming only. i7 6700k, GTX 980, 16 gb ram, 750 watt thermaltake toughpower, 1 tb. Also should i invest in a 144hz monitor with a computer like this that can run a lot of games over 60 fps?

I am saying that it has a decent chance. It is really hard to know for sure seeing as I can not time travel and with new DX12 games coming soon it is so hard to know for sure. The CPU and RAM are enough for sure and the 970 is a damn good...
No it is not overkill if you want to be able to play games at 1080p that come out in the next year or 2 without having to upgrade again right off. It seems like a decent gaming system. The 144Hz monitor would be nice for gaming.. Depending on the game the 980 will keep the fps over 144 in some and not even close in others, also the image setting effect this as well.

So you are saying this rig can play games 2 years from now in 1080p? And it will be able to get over 60 fps constantly?

The CPU and RAM are enough for sure and the 970 is a damn good card. I would think that it should be able to do most games at 60 fps for the next 2 years (might require some image settings tweaking on certain games). But over all yes I do think it would last you 2 years. The worse case you might have to get a new GPU in a 1.5 years or so when the generation after Pascal and Polaris are out if DX12 really kicks current cards in the butt.
