My budget is absolute max $2000 but i would preferably like to keep it around $1700

Im using it mostly for gaming and regular internet use. However, when University starts again I'll need it for some engineering modelling programs too.

Please help me improve the system or give me advice to get the same performance but lower the costs

I have already purchased the GTX 680.

Looks good, but I have a few comments. If you hadn't already bought the GPU I'd be suggesting a 7970GHz instead (if you don't need CUDA), and 2133 RAM is overkill; get 1600.

You may want a larger PSU if you want to SLI; 800+ watts. That PSU is fine for one 680 though.

The 7970 is fine if you don't need CUDA and don't mind if your opengl drivers are less stable. AMD seems to reserve real work on their opengl for the firepro series.

the 680 is fine.

interested in ram prices. seems like a premium over 1600 with little if any gains. ??

Pretty much. Very little performance difference (unless using an APU, which does care about memory bandwidth) above 1600.
