Is this a malfunctioning graphics card?

Hi all!

I was sat playing L.A. Noire when both my monitors went full on rainbow on me (video down below). I turned off my computer, checked the cables and turned it back on, it seemed fine for 2-3 minutes until it happened again. I'm quite certain it's not the cables since I use both HDMI and VGA (second monitor is old). My PC is around 6 years old while my graphics card is about 4 years old, it's an EVGA GTX 780 SC.

Since it doesn't happen on startup, I'm unsure if it's actually the graphics card failing. If anybody has a suggestion for a fix or anything useful please tell me :)

My full specs are as follows:

  • Motherboard: ASUS Z87-K
CPU: i5-4670K 3.40 GHz (3.80 GHz boost) with an Asetek 510LC liquid cooler
GPU: EVGA GTX 780 SC with ACX cooler
    RAM: 2x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws Gaming 2133 MHz
Soundcard: Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio
HDD: Seagate 500 GB 7200 RPM + 500 GB External
    PSU: CoolerMaster GX 650W bronze
    OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit

This is what it looks like on startup:

Here's a video of it happening:

I have an old gtx 660 which does this same thing, it might work for even an hour but then the screen starts flashing with colors.

Well f*ck me then hahaha, thanks for the input mate :)

Should i just put the clock speed down a bit? I've never really done any overclocking or underclocking. It's never over 80 degrees celsius.

Yeah, I would try underclocking the GPU core by 25-50mhz to start. Also memory by say 50mhz. This should not affect performance notably. You can use msi afterburner to do this, I would also set up a custom fan profile to allow the fans to ramp up higher and keep the card a bit cooler this can also be done in msi afterburner.

A small downclock can keep a malfunctioning card running for a bit longer whilst you look for a new one.

Thanks, I already use a custom fan profile in MSI Afterburner, I can't get it any lower than 70-80 degrees (in some games), but I'll try underclocking it. My pc has been running for about 2 hours idle now with no problems :)
