I own a single GTX 970, paired with an i5 4690 @ 3.9GHz...

I get 55 FPS with everything maxed out on even the most demanding games at 1920x1200.

The only thing that wouldn't be considered "overkill" for is 4K gaming. Is that what you're after?

For 4K gaming, that sounds reasonable enough. But for 1080p or 1440p, you just need an i7-4790k and 2 x GTX 970 SLI.

I wouldn't get 3 video cards... you see very little performance gains in games going from 2 to 3.

The processor is the best one out there, plus you can even overclock it. The RAM is fine. The only thing that really seems excessive is the triple SLI GTX 980s... I don't think you'd ever need that much power. In addition, the effectiveness of the SLI is reduced the more cards you add and I believe there was a study that proved a 3rd GTX 980 only adds like 4% performance (although it'd be best if someone else could confirm this as well).

Even a much weaker processor with a single GTX 980 would be far more than enough for 60 FPS at ultra (although if you want to do 4k, that's another thing entirely).

I assure you that a i7 5930k with 1 or 2 GTX 980s is much more than capable of playing Skyrim with a ton of mods.
